Music History Undergraduate Certificate

You’ll learn how music has served as a cultural cornerstone for the progression of challenges, events and perspectives in society over time. You’ll also understand how performers and audiences alike have changed. Explore these topics and more throughout the curriculum, which is ideal for students who

  • want to study history, musical forms and style from antiquity through the Renaissance;
  • have a personal or professional interest in music; and
  • seek to broaden theiracademic focus to incorporate subjects in music that may be valuable in a professional or graduate study setting.

To enroll in the 13-credit certificate program, undergraduate students must be in good standing and have completed at least 15 credits at Temple University.

Classes & Curriculum

The Music History certificate program comprises core required courses. There are no exit requirements, comprehensive exams, theses, or practica required for the certificate, but the program should be completed within six semesters. Certificate completion is acknowledged on the official transcript when bachelor’s degrees are awarded.

Required courses include

  • Music History and
  • Topics in Music Theory.

Students take three music history courses, each covering different time periods, including

  • antiquity through the Renaissance,
  • Baroque and
  • preclassical to early romantic.
